<<WASHINGTON, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement chief Richard Walker is bracing for a surge in financial disclosure fraud as global economic turmoil buffets company balance sheets.

Signs of this problem have already surfaced in a number of corrections to company earnings after scrutiny by the SEC.

''It's almost impossible not to pick up the newspaper and see reported almost on a daily basis large restatements of company earnings,'' Walker told Reuters in an interview.

The slowing of the U.S. economy under the weight of international economic woes has increased the temptation for companies to ''cook the books,'' he said.

SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt put his weight behind more aggressive action by the enforcement division in cracking down on companies who manipulate results to enhance their earnings.>>
