The trend has been to lower voltage logic because of the big advantage of causing lower power dissipation in a large integrated circuit. But these batteries will be used in systems; this means that they don't just power a pentium, they have to power the glue logic and the motors in the CDROM and hard drive and then light up the display. Of course, cells may be ganged to form batteries (the real meaning of "battery") to efficiently power these other devices, but then the original 2.1v one-cell voltage advantage is useless to the "pentium".
