AER's zinc-air batteries have the highest energy per weight in the rechargeable market. Unfortunately, the technology requires air flow into the battery to keep it working. They have recently developed a "smart fan" that only runs when the battery output starts dipping, to replace the array of small holes they used before. Because the fan takes power, the advantage of the chemistry only shows if the product takes a lot more power than the fan.

AER has been fighting an uphill battle to find acceptance of their technology for quite a while. Now that notebooks have fans to cool the CPU, a second air intake for the battery might not seem so strange. I doubt they will succeed in the cell phone market in the near future - if your hand goes on the battery, it covers up the air holes.

This company is a non-threat to VLNC. They can achieve quite a lot of success from here before they start to get in anybody else's way.
