That's why our Suburban will be the 2wd model.
I suspect we will see a whole new branch of sport-utes evolve to fill the niche of the old station wagon - a niche not quite filled by minivans. This'll mean ditching 4wd - and it might even entail more normal ride heights. Mercedes and Lexus have tiptoed into this arena - although the Benz still has some very trucky features under that modern skin. (And I despise the way the Benz treats tall/big passengers.)
BWDIK. Design features which I would like to see on cars... would get hammered in a market survey. Americans love gadgets.

"trucks make efficient use of fuel" They get wicked bad mpg. You'd have to put in a weight factor. Do that, and a diesel Hummer might come out the winner. "fairness" could get complicated - which is why I prefer the simpler solution. Flat charge per unit of fuel. Exempting commercial vehicles would imho breed more trouble than relief.
