nihil,
>> Intel needs three things<< --(2) higher net bandwidth
I feel that higher net bandwidth is not going to help Intel sell more high cost desktop PCs at all. In fact it will bring about the deployment of Net PCs and appliances much faster. Megabandwidth plays into the content and telecom hands much more than Intel's side of the equation. IMO. We'll see this with the classroom situation, where students are likely to connect with "dumb terminals" instead of using PCs as they do now. Storage and software will be on a main server and will be dished out as needed.

>>(3) applications that demand powerful microprocessors (such as DTV, 3D, speech, hifi audio, etc.)<<
DTV, Hifi audio and 3D are better served by silicon that specializes in multimedia. ATI has a very good idea of how the PC and TV will converge and how silicon should process that convergence.
Speech is very processor centric, this a great chance for Intel to capitalize on.
