arthur -
they are going to be even more interested in partnering with companies like Dell, in extreme tight security environments.

Dell's relationship with MSFT has been almost entirely in the business arena, and pretty much confined to customer/supplier. Dell has done some innovative things in understanding the MSFT distribution mechanisms and working that to Dell's advantage. Technically, Dell has pretty much focused on qualification of their products with MSFT at the earliest possible time.

I would be very surprised to see Dell do a joint technical development with MSFT - it would be completely foreign to Dell's history and business model.

Dell has had a mediocre relationship with the MSFT field. This is a result of the Dell direct model, which deprives the MSFT field of commission revenue. Dell has been aggressive in attempting to place hardware at MSFT for labs and demo work, but CPQ pretty much owns that space (CPQ is the exclusive partner for the NT5 applications qual lab, the NT5 field deployment program, and has more than 90% of the internal MSFT IT infrastructure).

Dell has instead concentrated on the big independent integrators. They correctly assumed that since CPQ, IBM and HP all have major in-house consulting operations, that the independents would be looking for an OEM partner who was not in competition with them -enter DELL. This is much more in line with the highly leveraged Dell model.

But I would not expect Dell to put anything into the kind of R&D you are describing.
