Under terms now being discussed, AOL, of Dulles, Va., would take over Netscape's Netcenter Web site (www.netscape.com), as well as Netscape's well-known software for browsing the Web. In a side agreement, Sun is considering an arrangement under which it would take control of Netscape's business software, paying AOL a fee for using Netscape technology, these people said.

This sounds a lot like the deal that was rumored to be discussed the last time around, when the stock was in the high teens. I still think selling out is a mistake for them, but at least it won't be the disaster for shareholders it would have been then.

Of course, they will have to decide who gets whatever claims Netscape might have against Microsoft (my money is on Sun), and the government will probably argue that Microsoft's anticompetitive tactics forced Netscape to sell out.
