Hi Dave, You asked: >What are "order wire" techniques?< Order wires, within the carrier industry, are special connections that are strung up between network operating centers and central offices for use by operating staff. They are sometimes [but not always] secondary grades of channel facilities that would otherwise be non-commercial in intent or quality, but they suffice for shop conversation between a carrier's internal employees, and between a given carrier and those employees of other operating companies. It has a special significance in international networking, becuase it adds immediacy to establishing communications between working parties. Sometimes a separate order wire dial network overlay is used to tie in many different locations per specific type of environment. For example, all of the points on the Project Oxygen will likely be tied together with an order wire network in order to allow personnel from different parts of the globe to coordinate activities with one another without having to set up incremental dial up lines for each and every action [such as system upgrades, or troubleshooting activities, or maintenance take downs]. Similar networks exist in many industries, including broadcast; brokerage. A brokerage firm's trading desk hoot 'n holler network is a popular form of order wire, as are junk-yard shout downs. Another example would be NBC's nailed up mesh of pipelines to its major affiliates and member stations around the world to coordinate program monitoring and distribution. Of course, in addition to all of these forms of voice apps, there are always the associated assortment of data links, many of which are still "dedicated" but a growing number of them are now on the 'net or provided over intranets.
