Emile, what do you call loving?
Taking away a man's culture
His language
His living
His land?

Changing beliefs
Beating prayers into children
Insisting that babies be born
Who will starve and die
Because of ideology
And the power of numbers?

There is plenty of darkness
And death everywhere
It litters the road leading to Christ
And let us not forget that Jesus
Was not a Christian.

It was a strange violence
Which grew up around the memory
Of a charismatic country preacher
Nothing to do with him at all
Out of his control
You could pass him on the road
And he would love you
While he roused the rabble

Maybe he lives today on the streets
of San Francisco, unrecognized
Homeless, and maybe not.
Maybe he is laughing with Siddhartha.
But he did not burn anyone at the stake
Or spread smallpox
Or pocket the wealth
Of the primitive world
Or conquer countries and continents.

Did you know that the Pope
Is holding a tribunal
In the year 2000 to find out
What really happened at the
Inquisition and try to heal

The bad karma it left on the earth?
Now that is a little bit Christ-like.

You want to talk about confusion and
Despair and terror
Lazy hatred and dark disguise?
Look no further. I do not know why
But the road to Christ itself
Leads often to darkness and death.

How can you reassure all
To follow you to Harpsville
A place no one has ever even seen?
Maybe there are just racks and
Drawing and quartering devices
For torture, like those millions
Of women endured at hell on earth.

"if the road leads not to Christ,
darkness and death will be their prize."

That's wonderful that you believe that....for you. The problem is that not every person (or anywhere *near*) on the planet was raised under the same cultural influences that you were.

If "Christians" could use the metaphorical examples in their beloved Christ's teachings as a guideline for the interaction with other groups of people, perhaps it might actually improve the overall experience of living on this overgrown, overpopulated, planet.

Instead, the divisions that "Christians" create among themselves, and other religious groups just speeds up the inevitable process of the Christian rituals being dissolved bit by bit, and absorbed into a homogenized pool of humans creating their own *NEW* mythologies.

Maybe a hundred years from now the commandments will be amended to read:

1) Thou shall not make thy neighbor's life intolerable by constantly haranguing them with your own particular belief system.

2) Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's Jeep.

3) Thou shall not practice unsafe sex or create more offspring than can be reasonably supported.

4) Thou shall not commit murder in the name of incomplete fetuses.

5) Thou shall not prostitute common sense on behalf of mentally ill "leaders" whose real goal is ego-gratification and unlimited opportunities for sexual intercourse with followers.

6) Thou shall not take thyself too seriously

7) Thou shall not gather in groups to criticize the belief systems of others.

8) Thou shall not claim to be in direct communication with God unless willing to offer tangible evidence of same.

9) Thou shall be willing at times to ponder the vastness of the Universe and expand your paradigm accordingly

10) Thou shall not place too much significance on any written words, but instead write your own.
