Hi divvie; Yeah, my mother is all hot to get on the internet now. Seems she found out about the on-line auction stuff...

I've been trying to sell her on a cheap desktop. There are three companies offering Pentium II 266 class machines with monitor and printer for $500 or so in the Seattle Thanksgiving paper right now.

But that's not what she wants. She doesn't want a machine that will take up a lot of space. So she's looking at lap tops, even though mobility is not an issue with her. She is also looking at set-top boxes.

I don't think the lap tops have big enough keyboards or screens, given the price you pay. But prices have been dropping rapidly in that area. Who knows? Maybe my mother doesn't want to play Red Baron II on her machine, and a low res screen is enough to get by.

P.S. The cool chick I met (geophysicist) probably isn't going to pan out. All the techie girls are already taken :(

But the whole incident did remind me of why it is women generally think engineers don't like to talk. The truth is that engineers love to talk about technical stuff.
