I was pokin' around the ML site and a report on NN was written on 10/23/98. It highlighted the following quotes one of which is very interesting:

INVESTMENT HIGHLIGHTS:

* We recently met with Newbridge President Alan Lutz and are encouraged by the changes being implemented at the firm.

* While the firm continues ro face challenges including the linearity of its current quarter, the meeting reinforced our more positive long term view.

FUNDAMENTAL HIGHLIGHTS:

* Telecom Market Weakness not Impacting Newbridge

* New Alliances Expected and Siemens Rejuvenated

* Current quarter a tough one

* New external management talent

* Focus on competing with Ascend and Cisco

* More Pragmatic M&A Strategy

* New Product Plans

* Review of Assumptions

Now quotes from some of the detail within the report:

It appears that the Newbridge/Siemens alliance has been rejuvenated with the several new products being announced by the alliance including the new 36177 ATM Access switch. However we think the focus of the new alliance with Siemens will primarily be in European markets. Over time we expect Newbridge will develop other large partners in North America and other markets.

Later in the report:

We are left with the impression that Newbridge would consider a friendly bid at a reasonable valuation but we do not believe this is a significant part of its strategy.

Is LU a potential large partner in North America? Does their willingness to discuss a friendly deal put them at an advantage to the recent statements from Michael Ashby that ASND is not for sale?

Given the comments earlier that ML is restricted on LU right now, I find the comments in the 10/23 report very interesting.
