Marden, you just don't get it. Qualcomm has, for a long time, said it is willing to license IPR for a 3G platform that is compatible with all three current platforms. The problem with Ericy's W-CDMA is that it has been created not to be compatible with IS-95. Since W-CDMA cannot be implemented without Qualcomm IPR, a "modified Q-CDMA" would be almost tantamount to cdma2000. I doubt Qualcomm could care less about the name, and if it will give some face saving to Ericy, call it what you will. The issue is convergence, so that all the platforms can be serviced.

Mardy,
Yes, and that's what they're gunning for. There's all sorts of reasons floating around about why ERICY doesn't want backward compatibility, and why Q will be in trouble if they don't get it,how GSM is reaching the end of its lifetime and what will happen if 3G is frozen by litigation.I'm sure you've seen a lot of this if you lurk on the QCOM at all.

Qualcomm wants a compromise which is backward compatible and takes the best elements of all proposals, which sounds eminently reasonable to me, although how these guys will agree on what the "best" solution is for any given problem is beyond me.

Here's an article I found the other day which I thought was interesting :
