I got you now. The attic over the garage was open and not filled with trusses, triangles with Ws in them. You will be taking out the bottom of the triangle that forms the roof support and transferring the load to a beam.

A suggestion if I may? Had a friend do the same and he put knee braces from the studs to the rafters. They added strength to the structure and a different look to the walls. Instead of one angle between the wall and ceiling it's two angles 3 feet apart.
