Hmmm. I'm still not convinced about this display business. Is this really something Nokia needs to be involved with? Of course, the 3G phones incorporate flat color displays so maybe the experience will come handy with these puppies. Three concept models of Nokia's W-CDMA phones have been featured in recent articles: from Time Magazine to Financial Times to Kauppalehti. They are flat oblongs with color screens covering about 70% of the phone surface. Some have a keypad, some not; nobody knows which is the model Nokia will choose for the initial production run.

Finnish newspapers are reporting that four UMTS licenses are auctioned soon. The target date for start of Finnish W-CDMA operation is March 2001... which is reported to be the same month when the W-CDMA is expected to become operational in Japan. Commercial GSM was introduced to world by Radiolinja here in Helsinki back in 1992 and Finnish government wants W-CDMA to be initiated in Helsinki as well.
