Cabletron Rises on Optimism for Strong Sales of New Products

Rochester, New Hampshire, Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Cabletron Systems Inc. shares rose as much as 13 percent, climbing for a fourth day, amid optimism that the company's newest computer- networking products are boosting sales and profit.

Cabletron rose 1 11/16 to 15 1/4 in late trading of 3.82 million. Earlier, the shares touched 15 5/16. The shares have gained 32 percent since Tuesday.

Two market researchers said last week that Cabletron more than tripled its share of the market for so-called Layer-3 switches in the third quarter. The company's SmartSwitch router line, which is more profitable than its older gear, gives Cabletron a leading product in one of the fastest-growing parts of the networking-equipment market.

''The new products are going to drive sales and margins higher,'' said Joseph Bellace, an analyst with Merrill Lynch & Co., who today raised his rating on the company's stock to ''near term accumulate'' from ''near term neutral.''

As sales of the SmartSwitch Router contribute a higher percentage of Cabletron's total revenue, they will help widen the company's overall profit margins, Bellace said.

Rochester, New Hampshire-based Cabletron acquired the products when it bought Yago Systems Inc. in March.

According to the Dell'Oro Group, Cabletron's share of the market for Layer-3 modular switches rose to 32.8 percent in the third quarter from 8.7 percent in the second quarter.

Ron, if you're on board,"welcome aboard"...if not, you can wait for the big breakout to come (16-16 1/2) or wait for some back filling. Surprisingly, CS is working through a lotta supply between 13 - 16 and has been moving 6%-10% for the past few days. The telecoms are real hot! and, even more, - the internets.

Re: <I think with some upgrades and a hot market we should see the
20's by the end of this week> Not likely since CS is not a YAHOO...but if you have patience CS will be OK. I think the products are doing well and risk is minimal..for me, I'm using a stop of 11-11 1/2.

Overall tech market momentum is incredible...a blow off now could do lots of damage.

I like your positive statements....good luck.

Layer 3 switching is the only solution
to get CSCO's market shares. If LU makes
this move, I think CSCO will have a headache.
