It is now clear that most people can understand it if someone starts equivocating about his/her private life. But what is unpardonable is the hypocrisy inherent in weaseling on issues such as abortion, since any stand taken by the person could impact people's lives in a big way.

The problem for many Republican candidates is that they have to behave as rabidly as possible during the primaries in order to win there, and then in the regular elections, they have to pretend to be as reasonable as they can be. As a result, they end up looking pitiable and pathetic, not to mention ending up on the losing side! :-)
