Tippett - in my experience auditors are no good at detecting fraud - because much of it is off the books eg a crooked purchasing manager taking backhanders - which can take many forms - including having an account maintained at a department store. Also fraud often involves collusion - difficult for an auditor to detect. Auditors are often concerned with presentation, write offs, etc. On the other hand an auditor of a major company has a lot of power - you don't fire the auditor lightly - a lot of questions will be asked.
