It is not a matter if believing that the Scriptures are all meant to be literal or all mean to be symbolic. You approach the Scritpures with the arrogant attitude that you can interpret everything without the help of the Holy Spirit in your person life, the Holy Spirit in the Church, the Christians throughout the centuries and the help of older Christians in your day. It is an arrogant and wrong attitude.
The Christian Church is two thousand years old; two thousand years of Holy Spirit inspiration and work. Every century and every epoch has experienced the workings of the Holy Spirit in the Church. We must draw on this wisdom to correctly understand the holy Word of God. St. Paul, St. Peter, ST. John etc. helped the Christians of the first century understand the Words of Jesus. The generation of new Apostles and Chrsitians trained by the Apostles passed on their knowledge to the next generation and so on. This is the holy Christian Church or Body of Christ. The Body of Christ is not a a worldly or man made organization but the Holy Spirit active in every generation of Christians.
If we neglect to draw upon our holy Christian Church and traditions, we cannot understand the Word correctly.
