Christmas condom tree and AIDS event canceled amid controversy

NEW YORK (AP) - A World AIDS Day event was canceled Monday because of plans for a Christmas tree adorned with condoms above a Central Park skating rink.

The Dec. 1 event, which was to include a benefit concert and lighting of the 35-foot artificial ''Tree of Life,'' was to be sponsored by Levi Strauss & Co.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights had threatened to boycott Levi products if the tree was placed at the rink, which is operated by the Makkos Organization, a private firm under contract with the city.

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani applauded Makkos' decision to cancel the event.

''I think Christmas trees have a certain symbolic importance ... to a lot of people. I think what they were suggesting would probably be inconsistent with that,'' Giuliani said.

Levi spokeswoman Cassie Ederer said the company had not been notified of the cancellation.
