The November 20, 1998 edition of the MMWR Weekly Report has been released and it is available for download at: cdc.gov November 20, 1998/Vol. 47(45):974-978 (file size 285,859 bytes) "Risks for HIV Infection Among Persons Residing in Rural Areas and Small Cities -- Selected Sites, Southern United States, 1995-1996" Summary: This article presents the characteristics of people with HIV who live in rural communities in the Southeast. A survey of HIV/AIDS patients in four Southeastern states found a high risk for HIV acquisition through sexual contact, although, prior to infection, most did not perceive themselves at risk (52% of men and 65% of women). This low perception of risk was compounded by a lack of knowledge about HIV transmission-- 33% of men and 29% of women who thought they were not at risk reported that they did not know how HIV was spread. These findings point to the need for improved HIV education efforts in rural communities.
