Further extending its product line beyond notebooks, Toshiba on Monday introduced servers that offer up to four 400-MHz Pentium II Xeon processors.

Toshiba unveiled the Magnia 7000 series enterprise-class server, which offers manageability, reliability, and serviceability features that tailor the system for applications such as data-warehousing, database, I-commerce, and high-volume business processing, the company
said.

The Magnia 7000 supports up to four 400-MHz Intel Pentium II Xeon processors and is designed to support future Intel processors. Intel today offers 450-MHz Xeon processors capable of two-way operation, and is expected to introduce a four-way, 450-MHz CPU early next year.

The 400-MHz Pentium II Xeon features either a 512KB or 1MB Level 2 cache memory, a 100-MHz front-side bus, enhanced memory architecture, and scalability advancements.

"With Intel's highly scalable Pentium II Xeon processor for servers, Toshiba is addressing the performance requirements of high-end server computing environments and enterprise customers," said Tom MacDonald, marketing director at Intel's Enterprise Server Group.

Magnia 7000 servers come standard with 256MB of error-correcting code (ECC), Extended Data Out (EDO) DRAM -- expandable to 4GB; six standard 3.5-inch hot-swap drive bays, 16 maximum storage bays with an optional second hot-swap cage installed, and two standard 500-watt, hot-pluggable power supplies.

Toshiba includes Intel's LANDesk Server Manager, which provides support for the Wired for Management specification and helps network administrators maximize uptime, Toshiba said. For extended remote access capabilities, Emergency Management Port (EMP) software allows
network management at all times from remote locations, including power on/off and console redirect.

The Magnia 7000 is compatible with Microsoft Windows NT and Novell NetWare and is plug-in compatible with a variety of enterprise-level management software packages, including Computer Associates' Unicenter, Hewlett-Packard's OpenView, and Tivoli's Framework.

The Magnia 7000 is symmetric multiprocessing ready and Intelligent I/O-ready and certified.

The Magnia 7000 with 400-MHz processor is shipping now with prices starting at $7,945.
