APM is an interesting example but, I believe, not a good comparison to what is happening with the mask companies. The change to MR was a revolutionary change that comes rarely. Yes they didn't see it coming, and it was a very big task to switch from making thin film heads to making MR, a completely different technology.

The change underway in the mask business is evolutionary and simply more of the same trend of smaller geometries. I think MASK will have have no trouble putting .25 and .18 into production. They will not get as much market share as DPMI and PLAB but because of their size they should grow faster than both. Keep in mind that only a few masks in a set for just about any chip design are at the leading edge.

What will really be interesting is where the technology goes about 5 years or so from now when light no longer works. No one can decide on what the post optical technology will be. That will be the revolutionary change and anyone who lags behind then will find themselves in the same position as APM.
