.k1bo: Your points were valid 6 months ago. Cree has developed and is producing in quantity "super bright" blue and green diodes. They have just signed several very large contracts to supply these in Japan. The Nichia chips require horizontal mounting, which is non-standard. The Cree chips are much cheaper, and nearly as bright.
Cree's older LED's were bright enough for Volkswagon to put them in all of their Beetles.

Cree's chips are improving their defects by 100% per year, and are good enough now for microwave and power amplifier integrated circuits. Watch for production contracts by next summer. wj
