The condition of the respective economies during political gridlock is the big difference between the US version vs Japan's. The state of our economy may be the only thing keeping Clinton in office. Gridlock in the US (right now) is probably the best thing that could happen - to keep our economy rolling. Any drastic action by the legislature might screw up a good thing.

If our economy looked anything like this Nikkei Index, even our Congress would have acted years ago.
