I thought Apple got it's original ideas for the mouse and the GUI interface from Xerox Palo Alto Research Center
Correct - it was the Xerox 'star' project which generated many of the general concepts used by both Apple and MSFT in their GUI products. There were others about the same time who came up with similar ideas but the PARC 'STAR' was probably the cleanest implementation.

What both Apple and MSFT did was put those concepts into an affordable platform.
