NETSCAPE-AOL A DONE DEAL - SUNW may have got the 'BEST' deal...
Red Herring Online November 24, 1998
(http://www.redherring.com/insider/1998/1124/donedeal.html)

From the article: "...AOL will purchase a minimum $500 million in
Sun systems and services through 2002, while
AOL will receive more than $350 million in
licensing, marketing, and advertising fees
from Sun, plus "significant" minimum revenue
commitments, over the next three years...."

"...That's a pretty sweet deal for Sun, which has
had its eye on Netscape for some time. CEO
Scott McNealy reportedly did not want to
make an acquisition that would have had a
material impact on his own company's bottom
line.

But the alliance with AOL-Netscape could
definitely improve Sun's prospects. The
combination of Netscape's browser and Sun's
Java programming language would let
developers create applications that can run on
any platform, not just Windows. That could
loosen Microsoft's current stranglehold on the
software market..."

AOL will probably want SUNW to manufacture "set-top" JINI enabled boxes to be used as an AOL ready devise for subscribers.

From the article...

"...The deal gives AOL huge leverage over the cable companies and others that want to build browsers into set-top boxes and other consumer devices. These players would need to deal with AOL for the Netscape browser, which, if AOL stays true to form, would be closely tied to AOL's services. That could backfire, though, by driving those companies closer to Microsoft..."

Our management scored another A+ on a deal done right. It's a win-win contract and secures higher revenues and continued growth for SUNW.
