S3 promoted on CNBC this morning by Schottenfeld Assoc (sp ???). The guy was very impressed by them and knows the new CEO. He is very impressed with Ken and said that sometimes you play the jockey instead of the horse, though he was very impressed with S3 on its own merits. Said that if they were liquidated today that they would be worth double their current share price. He also said that Savage 2 was shown at Comdex and was highly received. Right price, features, and timing. Also mentioned a company that does business with them and would like to do some big business with them regarding Savage 2 I believe. The baby was trashing the kitchen and i turned my head to watch him and just caught the gist of this company wanting to do business with S3. I think that it was IBM, kinda caught the mmm sound as i turned around. All in all, a very positive review. He sounded like he wasn't very impressed with the other top dog chip makers that he thought were very narrowly focused. Hope that i got that right and didn't miss anything between the baby trashing the kitchen and the toaster burning up.

Almost forgot, the analyst also mentioned the Intel/Merced patent infringment talks and said that it involved the way Merced would do graphics. I thought that the recently reported talks were over doing both the 32bit instruction set and 64 bit instruction set on the same chip ala the Exponential patents. This sounds more like something that may be from the CRUS patents that are more graphics related. I don't believe the Exponential patents are graphically based though I may be mistaken. Maybe the analyst was just a little confused.

>>An interview of S3 marketing head, at this site, quotes a per piece price of $35.<<

These prices are usually not factual, since the real prices change with volume. Someone ordering 100K/month gets a much better price.

However, that savage-2 chip, if the yield is as good as the article implies, will probably be interesting.

Lets see if any major design wins shows up.
