Great reply, Scrapps, and I really appreciate your taking the time.

This stuff confuses me even more because my situation is so different from most other folks'. My phone co. is not an RBOC, it is a private company, and because of our low population density here, there is NO compitition for either the PhoCo or their subsidized ISP. Since there are NO competing local dial-up ISPs, and NO other interests in providing local service, much of the dialog about how things are in more populous areas goes right over my head.

Thanks for clearing things up about the old copper, too. Old copper connections I understand. As for the wire itself, I couldn't understand why its age would matter, even if tarnished (which is very unlikely). So, thanks again.
