South Carolina Supreme Court Issues Ruling Regarding Legality Of Video Poker
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C., Nov. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- AMERICAN BINGO & GAMING CORP. (Nasdaq: BNGO - news) announced that on November 19, 1998 the South Carolina Supreme Court issued its decision on the legality of video poker in South Carolina, holding that video gaming devices do not constitute illegal lotteries under the South Carolina Constitution. The Supreme Court's ruling establishes that video gambling machines are legal in South Carolina.

This ruling stems from a request of the United States District Judge who has been considering a lawsuit filed by video poker players against a number of video gaming operators, including one subsidiary of the Company. In February 1998, the District Judge asked the Supreme Court to decide whether video gambling machines constitute lotteries in violation of the South Carolina Constitution. Although the Supreme Court ruling resolved certain material issues related to the pending lawsuit, the lawsuit will continue in Federal Court with respect to the other claims raised by the plaintiffs.

Andre' Hilliou, President, CEO and Chairman of the Board, stated, ''This ruling by the Supreme Court resolves a major issue which has been facing the Company and the video gaming industry in South Carolina. The Supreme Court ruling lays to rest many previously unsettled questions regarding the industry's opportunities within the State. The decision also now allows the State to proceed with a healthy and well thought out development of a regulatory environment while preserving the valuable tax revenues available to the State from the industry. We are extremely pleased with the Court's ruling as this clears the way for the Company to grow operations in South Carolina.''

The Company's corporate headquarters are located in West Columbia, South Carolina. American Bingo & Gaming Corp is a market leader in the $14 billion non-casino gaming market and $6 billion North American charitable bingo market. The Company generates a majority of its revenues from video gaming operations in South Carolina and also earns revenues from bingo centers in Texas, Alabama and South Carolina. Except for historical information contained herein, certain matters set forth in this press release are forward looking statements that are subject to substantial risks and uncertainties, including but not limited to government regulation and taxation, customer attendance and spending, competition, general economic conditions, and other risks detailed in the Company's SEC reports.
