Cyber stocks continued to post strong gains.
Overall U.S. stocks pared some earlier losses, fueled by
merger-driven bullishness.

paper and forest industry, investors on Tuesday pushed paper
stocks up, after giant International Paper Co. said it would
buy Union Camp Corp.

UNION CAMP CORP UCC.N UP 15-3/4 AT 64-11/16
International Paper, the world's largest paper products
company, said it will buy competitor Union Camp in a stock swap
worth $6.6 billion.

COLE NATIONAL CORP CNJ.N OFF 2-3/4 AT 15-1/4
The parent company of Pearl Vision said it will increase its
share repurchase program to one million shares, about 7 percent
of the shares outstanding.
The company expects to take a majority of charges in the
fourth quarter.

AMERIPATH INC PATH.O OFF 4-17/32 AT 4-9/16
Hambrecht & Quist cut the company's rating to a hold from a
buy rating after the company became caught up in an overbilling
dispute with Medicaid.
On Monday, the company said that Medicare asked one of its
labs for a $2.95 million refund to cover alleged overbilling in
calendar year 1996.
