John,

Level II quotes allow you to see the number of shares each market maker is bidding and offering for a Nasdaq stock on both sides of the current spread. Level I quotes only show you the current bid/ask and bid/ask size. Level II quotes provide useful information if you are day trading but I don't think they are useful if you are holding longer term positions. The following web site has a pretty good description of level II quotes.
