My quote screen for individual stocks on Discover Brokerage updates the volume with each trade. You have to constantly hit the "refresh" button however. Other information on the screen includes bid and ask size, tick, tick trend as well as price and total volume. You can more or less monitor this the entire trading day. However, many brokerage firms limit the number of quotes you can obtain or require that you do a certain amount of trading to get unlimited quotes. Every time you hit the refresh button it counts as a quote. Schwab gives you real time portfolio updating so I usually put my portfolio in one window, the Discover screen in another, My Yahoo financial page in a third etc. This allows you to get almost instantaneous access to news as well as quotes. There are also professional services available of course that do basically the same thing that I'm doing for free. Jim Cramer was complaining the other day about paying $2500 a month to get the latest news on his stocks from Telerate while Yahoo was giving it away free.
