Lucent Rises as Company Talks of Strong Demand (Update2)

Murray Hill, New Jersey, Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Lucent
Technologies Inc. shares rose 8.4 percent after the company told
some analysts and investors that demand for its products is
strong and said all of its major plants are running at capacity.

The shares of the world's largest phone-equipment maker rose
7 3/8 to 95 3/4 in trading of 12.9 million, making it the fifth-
most active U.S. stock. Lucent has risen 10 percent in the past
two days as Chief Executive Richard McGinn and Chief Operating
Officer Daniel Stanzione held private meetings with investors.

Lucent's confidence and upbeat outlook may have helped
relieve some investors' fears that demand for Lucent's products
is slowing, analysts said.

''There's been some concern about the current quarter,''
said Paul Johnson, an analyst at BancBoston Robertson Stephens.
''The stock was set up kind of like of a tinder box to take off
as soon as somebody said anything positive.''

Spokesman Jeff Baum confirmed what McGinn and Stanzione have
said in their presentations at the closed meetings. The Murray
Hill, New Jersey-based company didn't invite reporters to the
meetings or issue any press releases.

''All of our major plants are operating at full tilt to
deliver products to our customers this quarter,'' Baum said.

Quoting from H&Q's analyst report:

980 nm pump lasers, a critical element of fiber amplifiers for DWDM systems, continue to drive telecom growth and the outlook for this market remains extremely strong. 980nm pump revenue grew 23% sequentially, and 72% Y/Y, and management expects this growth rate (for pump lasers) to continue through Q4. Lucent remains the Company's largest terrestrial pump laser customer, and SDL has three other $1 million plus DWDM customers. . . .
