No. 2 -- Egghead.com

Executives at Egghead.com don't like the word "portal," and they won't use it in company presentations. Instead, Jim Kalasky, vice president of merchandising, calls Egghead.com's portal the "Jones Page," a generic term for the entry screen of the company's Web site. Renaming the front page of the site, Kalasky explained, tones down the cliche reference now common in the computer industry and signals that Egghead.com might have something unique to offer.

It's as plain and unadorned as an eggshell: The former pioneer of software specialty retailing, now a computer and auction Internet reseller, is in the process of scrambling its image.

The process started with the August 1997 acquisition of close-out catalog company Surplus Direct, which added two Web commerce sites: Surplusauction.com and Surplusdirect.com. Then, in February, Egghead closed all its retail stores in favor of Web sales. The next step, expected to be formally launched this month, is a redesigned site and new back-end system that vastly expands the company's ability to control merchandise and support customers.
