The Vancouver Sun reports in its feature business story in its Wednesday
edition that peace group End the Arms Race asked Ballard Power Systems on
Tuesday to cancel a contract with the United States Navy and withdraw from
other military projects. Reporter William Boei notes that End the Arms Race
president Peter Coombes says that Ballard is increasingly involved in
military contracts, tainting its reputation with ethical investors. A
Ballard official says that defence contracts are a diminishing source of
revenue, but one the company does not want to abandon. Paul Lancaster,
vice-president of corporate development, says that Ballard is not in the
arms business. He says that Ballard is focused on commercial, not military,
fuel cell products, but bids on defence contracts because development
financing for new technology in many countries is channelled through
defence departments. Ballard has several contracts with the Canadian
defence department and with military contractors in the U.S. and Germany to
supply fuel cells, mainly for projects to develop propulsion systems for
submarines.

I don't think this story will hurt Ballard in the least. As a matter of fact, they got some pretty good television coverage on last night's 6:00PM news as a result of it.
