Animal rights activists protest against what they regard as "the wanton killing" of animals. I don't see any of them protesting against the "routine" killing of animals such as cow, chicken, pig etc., for food (Of course, they do appeal to make the killing "more humane" and so on). Therefore, I don't think that they will have any problem with Sagan's solution.
