You're in a real mood this evening. <g>

One point I think we miss is that the position that 3Dfx is in. They are viewed as bringing the best to 3D. There venture into the OEM (or lower end) of the market was bound to be met with some disappointment from the game community.

When Banshee came out without 32 color, I thought it could be a disaster, but it doesn't seem to be a significant negative to the targeted consumer. V3 may just as well turn out to be a success.

Best Regards,
Jim

P.S. What is Ken Starr planning to do with those hands?

Maybe Mr. Hook got the inside skinny on the _real_ next generation...

My guess is a little different. I think Hook just might have pissed 3dfx into action with the drivers. And, who knows, maybe they're even paying Hook or one of his buddies to help out? Regardless, that statement about id and 3dfx working together to make sure Q3A works great on Voodoo hardware is very reassuring.

I'm not trying to be an apologist for Hook, but his points hit home with me. 3dfx has had ample time to develop OpenGL drivers. I wouldn't have made it a high priority either, but haven't they been promising it since February when V2 came out? The beta drivers were posted in June. I hope release final ones soon, so I don't have to purchase a TNT to do my OpenGL work in. Come on 3dfx! All you have to do is release it before my RMA'd motherboard gets back.

The latest from Sharkyextreme says that OEMs may have the V3 in Q1. I'm not sure if he means "sampling/testing" or shipping, but if it actually is released in Q1, 3Dfx will once again be in the lead. I'm wondering if the Q2 release is just for V3-3000 (which needs higher speed memory and good yields). Maybe V3 for OEMs Q1, sell the rest of the V2's in stock, and then V3-3000 in Q2, "Rampage" for xmas next year?

As for GMB, he's entitled to his opinion. If he's pointing out weaknesses that 3Dfx need to resolve, then it'll help in the long run. I'm sure that someone at id or 3Dfx said, ok already, we get your point, now tone it down a little. With the installed base of V2 and Banshee and with the fact that V2 owners are the key audience for Q3, I'm sure that id has V2 optimization as a priority and maybe 3Dfx isn't being as responsive as they hoped.
