Ausdauer, if you want to make CDs, the HP8100 IDE drive is the right choice. It writes CDRs at 4X, reads them at 24X and makes CD-RWs too. Software includes a system for creating one floppy and some CDs to restore your entire hard drive in case it crashes; a way to turn a CDR into a huge floppy disk; an audio CD duplicator/editor, etc.

Using Microsoft Backup you can write more than 1GB onto a $1 CDR at up to 40MB per minute. That's faster than tape, more reliable, and 100-year permanent. IMHO, it's well worth the <$315 cost.
