From the 10Q: In October 1998, the Company received a memorandum of understanding for the purchase, subject to the exercise of certain customer options, of up to an estimated $18.4 million of DST double density and quadruple density storage systems for a government program on which the Company had previously submitted proposals. Separately, also in October 1998, the Company received a letter of intent relating primarily to the purchase of several of the Companys recently introduced DST 712 automated tape libraries for approximately $7.2 million for another government program. In both cases, deliveries would occur during the period 1999-2001. Sales of the above products are subject to the negotiation of definitive agreements and terms and conditions with the respective customers, and there can be no assurance that satisfactory contracts will be completed or that any firm orders will result.

I've been meaning to search the Commerce Business Daily to try to find info on this. It seems an $18 Million government contract would require some bidding/request for proposals/information(RFP/RFI), and the CBD would be the place they would be required to announce it. $18 million would buy quite a bit of storage capacity, wouldn't it?

DESC: The Library of Congress is requesting information describing currently available, or soon to be available, high capacity, high performance robotic tape libraries. Appropriate libraries must be configurable for direct attachment to an IBM RS/6000 AIX based server and should be compatible with RS/6000 SP environment and AIX 4.2 or higher. Information is requested for those tape library products that scale in capacity from one terabyte of data storage up to a minimum of fifty terabytes of data storage. The information provided should detail fully the robotic library's tape device specifications; minimum and maximum data storage capacities and all applicable scaling paths; performance specifications in terms of volume access times and data read/write times; specifications for media including all supported media types and detailing capacity, media reliability and expected life; SCSI and/or fiber host connection capabilities; data caching features; built-in continuous operation high availability features; specifications for remote installation capabilities including connection options and distance; and all related costs. The information provided should also include an estimated cost or copy of a published price list of the proposed system. If applicable, GSA Schedule contract should be provided. THIS IS A REQUEST FOR INFORMATION and is considered to be Market Research. The intent of this sources sought synopsis is to determine if any sources exist, therefore no RFP is available. Consequently, any responses failing to provide the aforementioned data but instead submit a routine letter requesting a copy of a RFP will be ignored. Written responses must be received by September 15, 1997. Responses shall be submitted to the Library of Congress, Contracts and Logistics Services, Attention Kaye Klinker, 1701 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD 20785.
