Newbridge Networks Awarded Contract for China Post's Multi-Service National Network Backbone, Serving One Quarter of the World's Population
KANATA, ONTARIO--Network Enables Delivery of Voice, Data and IP Services Over Single, Unified Platform
Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced that China Post, the State Postal Bureau of the People's Republic of China, has selected the Siemens / Newbridge multi-service, multi-access platform to build the core national backbone asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network. The new broadband network will support the delivery of advanced voice, data and Internet Protocol (IP) services over a single, unifying ATM platform to customers in 31 provinces across China.
Since becoming independent from China Telecom, China Post has been upgrading its network to meet the rapid growth and demand for new service offerings. China Post required a highly scalable, flexible, reliable networking solution that would support its internal postal and communications services and enable it to expand its customer base by meeting demand for a broad array of next-generation, value-added services well into the next century.
"Newbridge Networks is pleased to be the exclusive vendor for China Post's national backbone," said Constantin Loudiadis, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific Region, Newbridge Networks. "This robust, reliable, multi-service, broadband network will enable China Post to deliver high-speed, innovative services throughout China well into the next century. The capability to offer high quality voice, in addition to data and IP services over a single, unifying broadband ATM platform will enable China Post to continue to seamlessly evolve its network to meet the changing needs of its customers."
The networking solution is comprised of the industry-leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 MultiServices Switch and MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager. The MainStreetXpress 36170 switch - the industry's only true multi-service, multi-access switch - offers a comprehensive suite of advanced services, including frame relay, local area network (LAN) interconnection, IP, circuit emulation and native cell relay.
The MainStreetXpress 36170 Switch enables high performance connectivity that allows various capabilities. For example, the switch's cell relay interface and circuit emulation enable China Post to provide video conferencing services within its operations.
Key benefits of the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager are its ability to centrally monitor and manage multiple-traffic networks, and support and manage more than 250,000 service connections simultaneously. Its high scalability also enables more than 120 operators to monitor the network at the same time.
"This is the second national network that Newbridge has been awarded in the People's Republic of China, the first being the digital data network (DDN), based on time division multiplexing (TDM) technology," continued Mr. Loudiadis. "The Company's experience in China, as well as the strength of our multi-service, multi-access platform and the breadth of services it supports, were key factors in China Post's decision to select Newbridge for its next-generation network. Over the next several years, we expect demand for next-generation services to grow significantly in China. The standards-compliant networking solution provided by Newbridge Networks will play a vital role in meeting this demand."
