Canadian companies are looked at favourably in Indonesia, but so are Japanese companies. Under the Marshal Plan, Canada trained a lot of engineers who are now senior officials in Government and industry. I have met literally dozens of people educated in Canada under that program.

A few years ago I was giving a SCADA seminar to about 40 officials with the Water Resources Ministry in Bandung. Before the presentation one of the attendees came up and introduced himself. He received his M.Sc. at the University of Manitoba and Ph.D. at St. Johns. During the seminar, I made references to some of the similarities in our two countries: vastness, with inherent problems of telecommunications, transportation etc. and suggested that "my fellow Canadian" (as I frequently referred to him) would corroborate my facts. Later he came up to me, and advised that he was pleased that I referred to him as "my fellow Canadian" but was afraid I was going to call him a "goofy newfy" (hope this true story doesn't hurt anyone's feelings).

We have received other orders from Renaissance over the past few months, but this one had a technical and market significance that I thought would be recognized. I think we need to find some way of telling the story in terms that the market understands. This is bigger than the receiving another order and provides a very nice solution for so many other applications. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Does anyone have any insight into the weakness in UIC? Is it Vancouver or something specific?

Stuart.
