ADR REPORT - Canada's Newbridge surges
By Ian Simpson

NEW YORK, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Canadian software company Newbridge Networks Corp. (Toronto:NNC.TO - news) surged Wednesday on news of a big Chinese contract, standing out among American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) and foreign shares.

But dealers said trade was light and largely featureless as U.S. markets headed into Thursday's Thanksgiving holiday.

''It's comparatively quiet today after a couple of days of interest in European ADRs,'' a trader said. ''It's probably the holiday making itself felt.''

Newbridge Networks was up 2-9/16, or 10.2 percent, to 27-11/16, the share's best performance since June. The stock was among volume and percentage-gain leaders on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company said Wednesday that China's state postal service would use the Siemens AG (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: SIEG.F)/Newbridge platform to build its core national multmedia network.

The network will allow the agency to deliver voice, data and Internet services in 31 provinces.

Among other active issues, Britain's Danka Business Systems Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: DNK.L) (Nasdaq:DANKY - news) rose 13/32 to 3-3/4 after the office supplies group said it had extended a parts and supply agreement with Eastman Kodak (NYSE:EK - news) for another month.

Six Brazilian telephone ADRs were among top gainers in percentage terms on the New York Stock Exchange. Traders said the ADRs were the smaller companies of the dozen that were spun off from Brazil's telephone company and started trading Nov. 16.

The ADRs were being driven up as investors switched their attention from bigger companies.

''There is no news,'' a trader said. Referring to a recent craze for Internet stocks, he added, ''It's sort of like the Amazon.com (Inc. (Nasdaq:AMZN - news)) and eBay (Inc. (Nasdaq:EBAY - news)) phenomenon in Brazil today.''

Telenorte Celular (NYSE:TCN - news) was up 11-9/16, or almost 57 percent, to 32 and was the top percentage gainer on the New York Stock Exchange. Telebras Holding (NYSE:TBH - news), which groups the 12 spun-off ADRs, was up 1-9/16 to 94-5/8.

The Bank of New York index of 439 leading ADRs was off 0.5 percent. ADRs allow U.S. trade of foreign shares.

Doug,

There are none so blind as those that will not see.

52-week range: 15 7/16 - 47 5/8

That's for NN.

The low was a little over a month ago.

The stock is up 75% since then.

It's still going straight up toward its 52 week high.

The street has shown it has regained support for NN.

NN is building a state of the art network for 1/4 of the world's population. That's more than 3 times (I repeat THREE TIMES) larger than the entire population of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

In other words, this is &^%*ing huge. HUGE!!!!
If there's any part of this message that you find difficult to understand, ask someone else. Because I give up with you.

There are many better candidates to short than a company that has just won an absolutely massive contract.

FWIW,
Ian.

RE: It would appear that the street wants hard earnings and is not willing to pay in anticipation.

P.S. Pat, Many thanks for keeping the faith and sharing so much with so many of us.
