Talk about untapped market potential! --snip-- The Legend Group and Computer Associates Create Far-Reaching Joint Venture to Deliver Enterprise IT Solutions Across China BEIJING, China and ISLANDIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 29, 1998-- Legend CA To Develop Flagship Products To Help China Confront Business Management Issues In a strategic move that will significantly advance China's participation in the global IT arena, The Legend Group and Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced they have established a joint venture to develop a new class of software applications for the emerging Chinese market. Legend CA, the joint venture between a wholly-owned subsidiary of CA and The Legend Group, combines CA's world-leading software technology and proven application development capabilities with The Legend Group's distribution channels, market strength, and intimate knowledge of the Chinese marketplace. Legend CA's initial goal is to develop three key software applications to meet the most pressing business issues identified by China's business community. These developments will result in a number of flagship software suites targeted for China's burgeoning business community as well as for export to other Asian and global markets. The first product under development, "Wen Deng," is a leading network development tool that is more intelligent and easier to use than C++ and other widely used tools. The joint venture underscores CA's commitment to China as both a source of exceptional technical talent and a huge developing market for the spectrum of tools and technologies that has made CA the leading business software company in the world. "We have consistently been impressed by the world-class technical talent in abundance throughout China as well as the huge market China represents for tools and technologies that help bring Asian businesses squarely into the global digital economy," said Charles B. Wang, chairman and CEO of CA. "We believe that this joint venture will strengthen the already advanced standard of computer technology in China by leveraging the technical talent of local programmers with the technologies emerging from CA's research and development efforts throughout the world." "Chinese businesses are rapidly confronting many of the same IT issues of complexity and control that Western corporations are coping with," said Liu ChuanZhi, chairman and president of The Legend Group, the leading PC manufacturer in China. "This joint venture between CA and The Legend Group is uniquely positioned to help this market streamline IT operations, improve efficiency and reduce the cost of implementing sophisticated computing solutions." Legend CA will serve China's information technology industry in two critical ways. First, Legend CA will bring CA's considerable financial and technical resources to bear on the challenge of advancing the state-of-the-art of application development in China. Second, this joint venture will empower China's software engineers to become even more productive in the global marketplace. "This joint venture is clearly in the interests of China's software industry," Mr. Liu ChuanZhi said. "It directly addresses one of the most limiting restrictions on our economy: the lack of key software applications and the most progressive methodologies to develop them." CA and The Legend Group will be equal partners in Legend CA's initial round of funding of $3 million. Legend CA will be based in Shengzhen. As part of the agreement, Legend System Integration Co. will become a general distributor of CA's Unicenter TNG throughout China and Legend Technology Development Co. will distribute CA's Enterprise Edition and Workgroup Edition product lines in China. Legend Computer Co. has also agreed to bundle the Unicenter TNG Framework with its servers. China's software market is valued at 15 billion RMB, according to 1998 figures released by the Center of Computer and Microelectronic Industry Development. This represents a growth rate of 34 percent over 1997. Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA), with headquarters in Islandia, N.Y., is the world leader in mission-critical business software.
