Here is a summary piece from the daily CDC news briefs:

"Antiretroviral Therapy During Asymptomatic HIV Infection Saves
Immune Function"
Reuters Health Information Services (11/24/98)
The Swiss HIV Cohort Study has found that the administration of
highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) to asymptomatic
HIV-positive patients early in the course of infection can help
preserve pre-therapy levels of immune function. The researchers
determined that treatment with zidovudine, lamivudine, and
ritonavir in 15 asymptomatic patients resulted in a reduction of
HIV RNA levels, memory CD8+/CD45RO+ cells, and activated
CD4+/HLA-DR+, CD8+/HLA-DR+, and CD8+/CD38+ T cells. There was
also an increase in the number of naive CD4+/CD45RA+ and memory
CD4+/CD45RO+ T cells. The authors, who report their findings in
the Nov. 12 issue of AIDS, assert that the data support the early
administration of HAART.>>

DRUG PRICES ARE HIGH ACROSS THE BOARD
Izzy it's terrible out there, either be fortunate and have a prescription plan from work, or go closer to bankruptcy each month.
I don't have Hiv but I am permanently disabled from an auto accident.
One chronic pain medication I use is a patch changed every three days.
so one month is 10 patches my pharmacy's retail price is $356.00
5 other medications I take retail well in excess of $150 monthly and that is not all I have to take about ten different medications and the retail value is about $1500/month. Thank God I have a prescription
plan to rely on which lowers the cost to about $300/month. The medical
ethicasts should have a field day on this but unless you have HIV,
people like myself have little visibility when they talk money.

>> The price of the HIV drugs are just completely out of control and too expensive. <<

What are the annual costs of hospitalization related to opportunistic infections? Prices are not set in a vacuum. The $$ benefits to society are enormous. That's now. The future benefit? We are well along the path to neutralizing a chronic viral scourge. HIV put the peddle to the metal for molecular medicine.

Just my $0.02. All we need now is another Hilary revival to set medicine back 20 years.
