Neil, Actually I just unloaded HWP at 62.5 after holding for approx 3 years for exactly the reasons you mentioned. 3 yr. profit was modest (shrs mostly bought in the low-mid 40's) but not too great in comparison to other big name techs. Good luck!!

I doubt HWP would be a worthwhile takeover target.

But I think it may make sense to spin off some pieces of the business. The instruments division, for example, is really not a good match with the computer side any more. Completely different attitude, different way of doing business, and a different kind of insfrastructure. My impression is that it's actually costlier to try to keep these two very different businesses together than to split them apart and let them go their own ways.

I also have to wonder about the printer business, and whether it might be more profitable as a stand alone. As an independent, they certainly could do a much better job of partnering with multiple computer makers than they do now.

Same is really true of some of the storage systems people. Do they really gain from being aligned with one single computer maker? Wouldn't they do better if they were an independent who could work with ALL computer makers to have their products incorporated?

HWP has a real "consolidation" mindset, when increasingly the companies which do well are able to do it by focusing on serving smaller, non-integrated markets. A move in that direction might be the right one for HWP.
