Mr. Brian Goodfellow reports
The Bellevue No. 1-17 East Lost Hills well, which blew out and ignited at
approximately 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 23, 1998, is burning sweet natural gas and
condensate. The well had reached a depth of 17,640 feet and had penetrated
the Temblor formation prior to the blowout. There were no injuries involved
in the blowout as the rig personnel were evacuated safely prior to the well
igniting.
Well control specialists Boots & Coots International Well Control arrived
at the location at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Nov. 24, 1998 and are
mobilizing their specialized control equipment from Houston to the site.
Most of the equipment is expected to arrive today to begin the process of
clearing the debris from the wellhead. Preliminary estimates are that it
will take until Nov. 30, 1998 to accomplish this task. Once the initial
wellhead cleanup is accomplished, a better assessment can be made to
determine the best alternative for getting the well under control.
As a contingency, engineering designs for a relief well are under way.
All personnel at the site were evacuated safely, and the main priority now
is to work with Boots & Coots to get the well under control.
