I was just reading news from Turkey again. Yilmaz is running a caretaker government for the Turkish president for the time being. He is threatening to make Italy an eternal enemy of Turkey because it refuses to turn over the terrorist Ocalan. A boycott of Italian goods is looming in Turkey. The European Union says a boycott of Italian goods is a boycott of the EU and it could retaliate against Turkey with a boycott of Turkish goods. Yilmaz, who speaks German, has described Germany's policy of supporting the eastward expansion of the EU as being similar to Hitler's policy of seeking "lebensraum", or living space. Does this sound like the way to conduct foreign affairs?

If Italy joins the group of Turkey's eternal enemies, it will be on the same list as Greece. Some politicians in Greece want to actively support the Kurdish guerrillas, but the Greek prime minister wisely points out that Turkey could then claim the Kurdish war is actually a foreign war rather than civil.

It is more clear than ever to me that the logic of waste oil cleanup is beyond the scope of Turkey's political ability.
