Stitch,

Having a quiet morning here before a day of over indulgence, I am trying to think through the current status of the Asia contagion. Most talking heads seem to say that Asia has bottomed and is enroute to recovery. Do you think that is true, especially in pertinence to your adopted homeland? Wasn't Malaysia going to build some gigantic high tech park, trying to attract the best of the best from the world? Wonder what is the recent status of the project.

I talked to my mentor in HK last night. He, since retired, founded one of the original JVs between HK and China manufacturing toys. The company is now traded on Nasdaq. I asked him about HK/China's competitiveness against other Asian countries and the likelihood of yuan devaluation. He stated that over capacity remains a big issue and profit margins had been cut razor thin already. Domestic competition is just as high if not higher than foreign competition. Zhu Rongji is a ray of hope but the resistance is equally strong. China's unemployment rate is unknown. HK's rate, at 5%, is previously unheard of for the SAR while the economy is now expected to shrink about 7%.

Somehow, I suspect there is a little too much optimism about Asia at this time. Anyone got something positive to cheer me up on this day of giving thanks?

OT,

Even though my trip was delayed, I did look at the weather maps and Phuket was miserable the time that I was supposed to be there. Better weather though, would probably have provided a fantastic meteor sky show while camping on some beach feeding mosquitos.

Too bad about the caves. Frankly, I am not that into caves. They are generally too dark to see anything spectacular. I was more interested in just Phang Gna Bay and vicinity. Hope the Sea Canoe op manager is OK. Wonder if it is the couple of people I have exchanged email with?
