Lest anyone falsely accuse me of being a bleeding heart liberal, let me just disavow that mistaken notion at the outset but, in terms of criticizing our esteemed tree hugging Veep for his perhaps less than politically correct demonstration at APEC I have little comment, save that the guy is not significantly worldly and probably a little out of his league so far away from his home in the tobacco fields of his state. So I am not too critical, this was his first big shot out of the gates, and what other Vice Prez has ever done anything so significant ? I'll avoid any comments about stimulating the youth of America's spelling skills.

Now, speaking to your comment on "sensational journalism" this just in; wife's brother and sister-in-law write that while visiting on his way back from Asia, the Prez was engaging the locals of Guam recently and took the time and trouble to hug wife's niece, a comely young gal, but divorced and mother of 3, yet still sub-30 in age. Says he posed for pictures with niece and brother's family.

I told wife to fire off a reply email warning them of his wicked ways. One can't be too careful even while entertaining the passing nobility in the far off and idyllic island of Western Pacific. They have a phrase for things like this - OOG (Only On Guam).

Bosco,

<<G'day all - regarding VP Gore's remark at APEC, [former] Ambassador Winston Lord [Bush administration] whose wife is Chinese, I believe, was supportive on News Hours [one of the round table] 2 or 3 night ago.>>

While I am in a definite minority here I will pipe in with this. I believe it is missing the point to debate Gore's remarks in terms of timing and content. What I do feel is most pertinent is that the remarks are an appropriate signal to the likes of Mahatir that we and the world are watching. Mahatir isn't stupid and, in my opinion, has come to the realization that he has gone too far. We need to make sure that message is repeated over and over. Any study of tyranny will find that apathy is almost always attendant until it is too late.

Just my 2 cents.

Best,
Stitch
