Hongkong Telecom goes dual band with Nokia
- GSM services to be enhanced with Intelligent Frequency Hopping

(November 26, 1998) - Hongkong Telecom has launched a dual band GSM network, supplied by Nokia. Hongkong Telecom will use Nokia's Intelligent Frequency Hopping solution, which is combined with the network - marking a first for Nokia.

The contract sees the provision of a dual band national network in Hong Kong SAR, which is now in operation. Nokia won the first GSM network order in Asia with Hongkong Telecom Mobile Services (previously known as Hongkong Telecom CSL) in 1991. Today, it is Hong Kong's largest digital network.

Nokia is providing equipment to cover both GSM 900 and GSM 1800 frequencies. Part of the agreement includes the supply of the Nokia Intelligent Frequency Hopping (IFH) solution. The technology can add more capacity to GSM networks compared to current levels as well as offering superior network quality.

Nokia has provided Hongkong Telecom with its Mobile Switching Centres, Home Location Registers, Base Station Controllers, Base Stations, Short Message Service Centre, the Nokia NMS network management system and an extensive range of customer services.

"With this network our customers will benefit from high quality coverage, roaming options and an exciting range of additional mobile services," says Adam Wong, Director, Mobile Networks, Hongkong Telecom Mobile Services. "Nokia's proven track record of providing high quality, high capacity solutions was a key factor for us choosing Nokia as our supplier."

"We are pleased to be able to continue our co-operation with Hongkong Telecom, which began in 1991, pushing the limits of GSM technology even further in terms of capacity and quality in a very demanding environment such as Hong Kong," says Pekka Soini, Vice President, System Development, Radio Access Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "Nokia's IFH solution is unique as it utilises very tight frequency reuse techniques as well as controlling interference, maximizing both network capacity and quality simultaneously."

Hongkong Telecom, a Cable & Wireless Company, is Hong Kong's major full-service communication provider, marketing a full array of quality voice and data telecommunication services backed by a state-of-the-art, fully digital fibre-optic network. Services include basic telephony, international calls, specialized fax and data products, value-added services, Internet access, multimedia service, satellite links and telecommunications equipment and systems.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related
customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion (USD 9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on five European Stock Exchanges and on the New York Stock Exchange (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 42,000 people world-wide.
